About

Inventions: The Harpsichord Across Time and Borders is a project under the umbrella of Theorbo Today, which aims to create new works for old instruments, with a focus on female composers. The Inventions project is directed by Janet Oates, who has recently commissioned three composers – one each in Ireland (Evangelia Rigaki), England (Janet Oates), and Scotland (Lisa Robertson) – to write new works for harpsichord, inspired by specific historical works from their respective countries. All three commissions are being premiered in the autumn of 2024 in each country by three different harpsichordists: Ireland (Yonit Kosovske), England (Katarzyna Kowalik), and Scotland (Tiffany Vong). These new compositions will be performed alongside other historical and contemporary works (primarily by women), celebrating lesser-known music by local and regional composers. This concert will also include works by Fiona Linnane, Ailís Ní Ríain, and Meadhbh Hayes. The Inventions project is very grateful to receive funding from: Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Sound Festival (Scotland), The Marchus Trust, The Hope Scott Trust, Mary Cooke, and The Francis Louth Trust.
